LASIK FAQs

LASIK is a procedure used to improve vision in individuals who are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism. The surgery provides vision improvement that allows patients to see clearly without the need for corrective lenses. You may have questions about whether LASIK is right for you. At Lavenburg Medical Group in Elkton, MD, Newark we can provide answers to all your questions about LASIK surgery.

Who Is a Good Candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery?

Our eye doctor will ask several questions to determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK surgery. You must be at least 18 years old to receive the surgery. You must be in good general health with good eye health and no current eye infections or conditions. You should have stable vision for at least a year. Because hormones can cause eye changes, you should wait until after pregnancy to receive the surgery. If you have an immune system problem or degenerative disorder, you may not be a good candidate for the procedure because of the effects on healing.

What Happens During the Procedure?

LASIK uses high-energy laser light to create a tiny incision in the surface of the eye. The cornea is then reshaped to a more normal shape to allow clearer vision. The procedure is considered safe and effective for improving vision.

Is LASIK Eye Surgery Painful?

Our ophthalmologist will administer an anesthetic to the eye's surface, so you feel nothing during the procedure. You may have some mild discomfort in the eyes for a day or two after surgery.

Are There Any Side Effects from the Procedure?

Generally, side effects are mild and pass quickly. Some individuals may notice haloes or starbursts around lights, particularly at night. This effect diminishes after a short period of time.

How Long Is the Healing Period?

Our eye doctors will advise you to rest for the remainder of the day. You can resume driving and work duties the next day. You will be required to visit us after the procedure to ensure good healing and check that your vision has improved.
